SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT MEMO
Everything You Wanted To Know
Week of December 4, 2017
A Note From Our Principal:
Welcome to Advent! As we get ready to celebrate the birth of our Savior, let us remember there are many ways for us to prepare. Throughout this month, our entire school community will gather in our cafeteria each Monday morning at 8:20am for our Advent Prayer Service. This activity, led by faculty and students, helps bring our focus to the true meaning of Christmas as we prepare for the birth of Jesus. All are welcome to attend!
Another way our school and parish prepare for Christmas is to donate items to our St. Vincent de Paul food drive. This active ministry within our parish will put together over 200 food boxes that will feed families in the local Southwest Portland community. Items requested include protein products (peanut butter, beans, tuna and stew), canned vegetables or fruit, soup, paper products such as paper towels or toilet paper, pasta, spaghetti sauce, Hamburger Helper or other packaged dinners. Please take some time during your grocery shopping this weekend and pick up a little something for those in need.

This Wednesday, December 6th is our Band and Glee Choir performance and Wednesday, December 13th is our kindergarten through fourth grade program. Both concerts begin at6:30pm in our church. Building our Foundation on Holy Ground
The song, “The Twelve Days of Christmas” is an English Christmas carol. From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of the Church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember. Come check out the doors in our school to see our students’ decorations celebrating our 12 Days of Christmas and perhaps you can find both the surface meaning and the hidden meaning for our church.

St. Vincent de Paul Christmas Food Drive
The drive is underway; I have seen a number of items brought in already. Thank you. In addition to food donations we welcome your help on three different days. December 14 from 10 am- noon we will move and sort food that was donated by local Boy Scouts from our food pantry to the cafeteria. The 8th and 7th grades do much of this, but having a few adults around helps it run even more smoothly. December 15 at about 10 am produce will be delivered and bagged in the cafeteria. At 6:30 pm that same evening we fill food boxes. On Saturday, December 16 the boxes are delivered after a blessing of the food at 9:45 am.

SJF Youth Group Christmas Project
We are gathering items to include as Christmas gifts for the ladies who live at Jean’s Place – a home for women who have come from unsafe homes and have been affected by domestic violence. We are seeking donations of new hair brushes and hair ties or hair accessories, travel size hygiene items, standard band aids, pretty bookmarks, scarves and warm scarves. We will use the scarves as wrapping for the boxes and are also collecting tea, cocoa and other hot drinks for a warm beverage bag. There is a bin in the back of church for these items and a bin will be available in the school later in the week. We will collect through 12/15. Thank you!!

Annual Spaghetti Dinner
The SJF Spaghetti Dinner, on Sunday March 10, is a great way to get your volunteer hours in and help the school with its biggest WHOLE FAMILY and Parish connection event! We need a village to make it happen this year, and will be having our Kick-Off meeting for those already on Committees as well as anyone interested in helping either on a Committee or in some capacity on Thursday, January 4 at 7:00 pm in the school Library. One new add this year is a Wine Garden, and we need a Wine Garden Coordinator to make it work. Details and signups on School Speak! If you have questions or need additional information about how you can help the event, contact this year’s Spaghetti Dinner chairs, Alex and Andrea Jones, firstname.lastname@example.org .
