SJF SAM 09-18-18

Everything You Wanted To Know

Week of September 17, 2018

A Note from our Principal:

Now that the school year is back in full swing, our entire SJF faculty and staff are looking forward to seeing you at the Back to School Nights. Tonight (Sept 18th) is the middle school Back to School Night presentation starting at 6:30pm. Our K-5 Back to School Night is tomorrow (Sept 19th) beginning at6:30pm. Both sessions will be in the cafeteria. See you then!

Safety for our students and families is our number one priority. In an effort to provide a safe environment for our students, as well as to accommodate the needs of our parent volunteers and visitors to St. John Fisher during school hours, we ask that you please follow these very important guidelines for our parking lot to ensure the safety of everyone:

Drop-off & Pick-Up :

  • If utilizing the car lane, we will follow our drop off/pick up protocols and cars may enter via Vermont or 45th, following the traffic pattern to the front of the school.

  • If parking, please make sure to utilize all the forward parking spaces in the lot.

  • Please do not park in the marked drive lines.

  • Upon exiting the campus, please turn RIGHT onto SW 45th Ave . We understand that may require an alternate route; however, it is in the best interest of SAFETY and time.

  • If utilizing the upper playground after school, all children must remain on the field or playground. No basketball or children on the asphalt until all traffic has cleared.

SJF Student Pedestrians : Nevada Street is the only exit for vehicular traffic. It is a narrow street and with the additional traffic, not the safest pedestrian exit from the school. If you have a child that walks home after school or to the SW Community Center, we ask you review the Pedestrian Plan map below and educate your child on the route. Students will exit campus at a pedestrian path connecting to St. Luke’s and sidewalks along California St. to SW 45th. Students will then use the light at Vermont and 45th to cross.

In closing, as a general rule of thumb, please drive cautiously and be aware of the surroundings during drop off and pick up. We ask that if you bring your pet or cell phone with you to pick up/drop off your child, please leave the pets in the car and cell phones off to avoid distractions and maintain safety. Thank you for helping to keep our students, faculty, staff and parents safe on campus.

Hello SJF Families! Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about hosting our easel parties! Didn’t school just start?!? Easel Parties contribute to a huge part of the SJF Auction Profits…it is so awesome that we do these events not only for us but for the kids as well!

This year, we need to confirm our Easel Party dates a little earlier than last year. Since the Auction isn’t going to be held until April of 2019, we need to get our parties advertised and give people a chance to purchase their spots and get them on their schedule prior to the Auction. Of course, there will still be Easel Party sign ups on Auction night as well!

We would like to start putting the parties up at the Back to School Nights (Sept. 18-19) for people to start signing up. We will continue to offer other opportunities throughout the year for people to sign up!

If you already have the party, date, hosts, etc…please email me ASAP so I can start getting those boards out to print. If you have questions about your party, feel free to send me an email or give me a call! If you are new to SJF and don’t know what an Easel Party is…please send me a message and I’ll fill you in on all the fun details!

Thank you all for all you do!

Hilary Andreas

Knights of Columbus host their first pancake breakfast of the school year on Sunday, Sept. 23 after the9:00 and 11:00 am Masses. Join us at the 9:00 am Mass for the blessing of school faculty and religious education instructors, then stay for breakfast!

In January 2014, St. John Fisher launched a strategic planning and visioning process to identify the needs of our 21 st century church and school. To stay relevant, inviting and vital, that plan matured into the Growing to Serve Capital Campaign.

As part of the Campaign’s Master Plan Phase I, St. John Fisher School was renovated over the 2015 summer break, with work completed on time and under budget. A new HVAC system was installed to replace the school’s 50+ year old boiler and new plumbing replaced water pipes that had burst. Classrooms and hall interiors received new flooring, ceilings, lighting and paint. The upgrades resulted in efficient utility costs and, most importantly, a better learning environment for students and teachers.

Phase 2 of the Master Plan, constructing the Corrado Family Center, is underway. The main level will feature a large gathering space that will include a commercial kitchen and seating capacity for >300. It will function as the school cafeteria and serve as a flexible meeting area for community events. Essentially, many of the activities we host in the current school cafeteria, Back to School Night, BINGO, PTC meetings, Graduation Reception, Spaghetti dinner and School Auction, will now be held in our new Corrado Family Center. The lower level will feature meeting space, additional multi-use rooms and a community food pantry. An elevator will make the new building completely accessible.

To date, parishioners and school families have pledged approximately $4.3 million towards the Growing to Serve Capital Campaign. A recent withdrawn pledge of $600K, combined with other pledge reductions totaling over a $100K, and elevated construction costs (approximately 25%), leave the campaign currently $1M+ underfunded. We need to raise this amount in order to finish The Corrado Family Center.

It will take great effort from our whole community to reach the campaign’s goal. We are grateful to those who have generously given to date, we wouldn’t be where we are without you. But, if you haven’t made a pledge yet, please thoughtfully consider the financial role that you can play in helping us complete this last campaign phase. When contacted by our fundraising team, please give them a warm welcome.

I will be chairing this new phase of the fundraising campaign and look forward to speaking to you at Back To School Night. If you would like to be a part of the committee please contact either myself or Principal Merrit Holub.

Let’s work together to improve the spiritual, social and learning environments for all who come to St. John Fisher School.

Thank You,

Ted Fettig, SAC Chair

We held our Jog-A-Thon kickoff assembly last week and pledge packets were sent home with students last Friday, so we are OFFICIALLY underway!

With the change up of events this year, the Jog-A-Thon will be on Friday, October 5 th , from 8:45-11:00 am at Jesuit. We have set a goal of $35,000 for various SJF programs, field trips and equipment. If every student raises $170 we will reach this!

Please get your PledgeStar webpage set up, if you haven’t already! It’s very easy and a convenient way to reach out to ALL THE PEOPLE!!! Stats show that for every 10 emails sent, 5.5 donations roll in! You can also send text messages to cell phones, so get moving and let’s raise some money for SJF! ** The class who sends out the MOST PLEDGESTAR EMAILS & TEXTSbetween 9/14-9/28 wins a popcorn and movie party!!**

Thank you to our sponsors who generously make this event possible and offset our expenses. Our T-Shirt sponsors include Fred Shearer & Sons, Grove Custom Homes and Adidas! This year’s Water Bottle Sponsor is Auntie Anne’s Pretzels. Tent Sponsors are: AJC Consulting, Jay’s Wide Shoes, Miller Law, NW Women’s Clinic and Perlo Construction. THANK YOU ALL!

We need and welcome your volunteer time at SJF. If you are a new family to SJF, you must comply with the following three Archdiocesan mandates :

  1. Have a completed, current and clear “Background Check” on file. Requests for Background Checks are made through the main office. St. John Fisher will pay the fee for processing. These background checks are renewed every (3) three years, again at no cost to you.

  1. Attend the Archdiocesan required “Called to Protect” training regarding child abuse. The school and parish collaborate on offering viewings of this video at the beginning of each school year and on specified dates thereafter. Additional information on Called to Protect at SJF is below.

  1. Read and sign the “Standards of Conduct for Ministry with Children” form. This form is available on the Archdiocesan website ( ), in the school office, and on the “Forms” page of SchoolSpeak.

All returning parents who volunteer at school must complete a yearly mandatory training update specified by the Archdiocese. The training for the 2018/2019 school year consists of two mandatory modules: Preventing Sexual Harassment and Duty to Report. Parent volunteers must complete both modules by December 1. Directions on how to access this this year’s training updates are attached to this SAM.

We will be showing the Called to Protect videos for new parent volunteers at St. John Fisher on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 8:30 am1:30 pm and 6:00 pm in the school library. All new volunteers at the school must view this training. Advance registration is not needed, but be sure to get your name on the sign in sheet when you come to watch the video. Each session lasts about 90 minutes.
