SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT MEMO

Everything You Wanted To Know

Week of January 7, 2019

A Note from our Auction Chair

Hello St. John Fisher Community,

First, I’d like to say that it is an honor to be chairing the 2019 auction. Will and I are beyond grateful to be a part of this special community, which has in many ways become a part of our extended family. We truly consider it a privilege to have this opportunity to support SJF and this great community that SJF is comprised of.

Thank you to you all who participated in the Golden Horseshoe raffle, and to those of you who were able to attend Wine and Cheese – our auction season kickoff event. It was a fun, and successful event, and it was great to see so much support from many of you.

As we turn our focus to procurement for the live and silent auctions, we need your help. This is one of the more challenging aspects of organizing the auction, as well as one of the most critical to the auction’s success. We are looking to you for donations of what we refer to as “anchor items”. An anchor item is a big ticket item that we can auction off, either through the silent or the live auction. They can be anything from weekend use of a vacation home, tickets to sporting/music events, premier restaurant vouchers, museum passes, Disneyland passes, airline tickets, professional services, adventures, memorabilia, etc… You get the idea. These don’t have to be items that you yourself have direct access to. They can (and often do) come from family members, friends, employers, etc… Please, consider what you can offer, and please, ask around. All proceeds go directly to SJF.

If there are items you’d like to donate, or if you have any questions, please reach out to me, Jill Habrich and Morgan Savela.

We would like all donated anchor items no later than February 8 th . Thank you in advance – we are counting on your efforts!

While we have many new things in store for the auction this year, we are also excited to continue on with many of the auction traditions we all know and love – so stay tunedand THANK YOU for your continued support!

Warm Regards ,

Lisa Markusen

SJF WEEKLY NEWSCAST

They’re back–catch up on SJF school news here .

2019-20 SCHOOL CALENDAR

Looking ahead to next school year, we have a few decisions to make regarding the start date and Christmas break dates. Most of the public schools in the Portland Metro Area and many of the Catholic high schools start school before Labor Day. This can pose an issue as many community centers and/or private camp companies provide care only on days when large public schools are out. However, St. John Fisher School did provide summer camp the week before Labor Day, and we would continue to offer that service should we plan to continue to have school start after Labor Day. Additionally, with Christmas on a Wednesday next year, the Archdiocese is recommending we do a similar structure to the break as we had this year with 2 half-weeks and 1 full week of Christmas vacation versus 2 full consecutive weeks Monday-Friday.

Please take this quick 3 question survey by Friday, January 18th to provide us feedback as we formulate our calendar for 2019-20.https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/W9VH5J5

I will be reporting our decision regarding the start date and Christmas break dates by February 1st. Thanks!

GRANDPARENTS’ & SPECIAL FRIENDS’ DAY – JANUARY 30

Don’t miss this chance to share SJF with your student’s grandparents or special friend. This special day includes Mass, lunch and the chance to show off your school and classroom. Let us know who’s coming when you turn in the attached flyer. Additional copies are coming home in student book bags or are available in the school office.

INVOICES FOR THE WINE & CHEESE AUCTION KICK-OFF EVENT

This past week, receipts and invoices were sent to families who purchased Easel Party tickets or Fall Raffle Tickets from the Wine and Cheese evening. If you provided a credit card while checking in at Wine and Cheese then your credit card was charged. If not, that is why an invoice was sent. The auction team apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused for the tardiness of the invoices being sent. This was the first time we had Easel Parties for purchase apart from the Auction, and we learned a lot! We have put processes in place to avoid this again in the future. Please let Jill Habrich (jehabrich@gmail.com ) Auction Finance, know if you have any questions. Thank you again for supporting the SJF Auction!

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY AT SJF

While we have had good luck with the weather so far this school year, here is a review of our policy regarding school closure during bad weather. These guidelines can also be found on page 15 of the Student/Parent Handbook for 2018-19 :

Any announcements concerning school closure and late starts are shared with parents three ways: parent email , posting on the SJF Facebook page , and a News Flash posting on the homepage of SchoolSpeak . During inclement weather, such as snow days, St. John Fisher families should follow these instructions:

Rule One: If the Portland Public School District is closed, SJF is closed.

Rule Two: If Portland Public School District has a late opening, SJF

has a late opening at 10:00 am. (Staff will report by 9:45 a.m.) Morning Extended Care and Hot Lunch are not offered on “late start” days.

Rule Three: SJF does reserve the right to make an independent decision regarding closure or late opening.

In the case of early closure during the school day due to deteriorating weather conditions, parents are asked to stay aware of the situation by listening to local TV/Radio stations, or contacting the school office directly.

CHESS WIZARDS

Chess Wizards still has openings for its winter session at SJF on Thursdays from 2-3 pm. Classes will begin next Thursday, Jan. 17 and go through March 21. Additional details and sign up information is on the attached flyer.
