SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT MEMO
Everything You Wanted To Know
Week of 09-30-24
A NOTE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Safety has always been a top priority for our SJF community. Studies show that having students practice what to do in an emergency situation will help prepare them if/when an emergency situation happens. Therefore, we have a number of safety drills we conduct to keep our school safe.
Fire Drills: conducted once each month during the school year (ex: fire in building)
Earthquake: conducted bi-annually (ex: earthquake)
Lock Down Team Response: conducted bi-annually (ex: medical emergency in the building, police activity in neighborhood or airborne contaminant in the neighborhood)
Evacuate: conducted bi-annually (ex: active shooter or armed intruder in the building)
All these emergency drills, and their proper procedures, are reviewed with students prior to the initial drills. Here’s the timeline for our drills for this fall:
Fire Drill: conducted on September 6th
Earthquake: conducted on September 11th
Lock Down Team Response: conducted on September 9th and 19th
Evacuate: scheduled for October 8th at 8:30am with our Beaverton Police Department Resource Officer Justin Haugen
Additionally, we would like to share some helpful resources to help facilitate your understanding of our implementation as well as help guide conversations at home. Parent support of these procedures is critical for our success.

Finally, with fall's arrival we have also seen an uptick of illness. A good rule of thumb is that if a child has a fever (over 100.4), diarrhea, vomit, or is not well enough to be outside during recess, please keep the child at home. Parents, please do not give your child medication and then send them to school hoping they will ‘feel better’ as the day goes on. Students must be fever-free and symptoms reduced for 24 hours without medication before being readmitted to class. Parents are asked to notify the school office by 8:15 a.m. each day that a child will be absent from school because of illness. Middle school students should email their teachers notifying them of their absence. Students who become ill (fever, diarrhea or vomit) during the school day will be held in the school office and/or in the child’s classroom based on emergency need/care. Parents will be contacted to take the child home. Thanks for your cooperation in keeping our community safe and healthy.
